To make money online many people jump right in before they are ready.

You know that to be a rocket scientist, a doctor, a brick layer, a construction worker, an office worker, a teacher (and of course I can go on and on) there are prerequisites, things you must learn, before you can be successful, you don't just jump right in.

The same applies to the Internet marketing industry even though there are unsavory people out there who'd have you believe it's a "Walk in the Park" and requires no more than the belief that you can just do it.

And I'll have to admit, it is a walk in the park compared to what you have to put up with in the working world punching a clock being a subordinate to someone who does not have your interests in mind, but there are still rules you have to follow and pitfalls you must avoid to actually make Internet marketing work for you.

Most people will not make a dime online and yet there are others who will make more in one month than most people make in a whole year. Why is that?

My answer begins with the age-old chicken or egg question, "what comes first the chicken or the egg"? Personally I vote for, well never mind, each argument you or I make comes back to the same old conclusion - I have no clue and I don't think many of us do either.

But one thing I do have a clue about and know for sure is that to make money online you must first have Passion for the company products and/or service of any Internet business from which you expect to make money.

Passion in this sense simply means that you've researched and like the company and products or services. It is then that you translate that like (or Passion) into the education, excitement and work that usually accompany Passion.

I will have to say that many online entrepreneurs are so good at what they do that they ignore passion because they can sell anything. But I'm concerned about those of you who are not so knowledgeable at working an online business successfully.

Now, I'm not trying to make anyone believe that Passion is the only thing necessary. Because to be successful you must also have a good website, good marketing, widespread advertising, company support, effective keywords, and etc. Those things are often learned from the company you join (if it's the kind I recommend) - but sidestep Passion and you reduce your chances for success dramatically.

It therefore follows that, if you have no Passion for the company and the products and services provided by that company, again, you won't attempt to do the work you are being taught.

Internet marketing work is typically not all that difficult or time consuming but it does take motivation caused by Passion to get you off and running with a sustained effort so that you won't stumble.

You have a great resource in the Internet search engines to search about the Internet Marketing industry for business opportunities, USE IT!

Your research should uncover a company that you like and have confidence in. It should be solid, founded on great principles, and easy to understand with great products and services that are sell-able for which you can have Passion. If you don't find it move on,
You can find the right opportunity containing the attributes identified above.

Comments like, well, that one sounds good and the compensation plan is excellent so I guess I'll start that business - does not sound like a decision based on anything near Passion. And remember when you hear that an Internet "guru" does that, don't be tempted, because as I said earlier they are experienced and can sell just about anything, without being Passionate about the company products and services.

Note: By the way it's your goal to get to the point where you can sell about anything online. That end skill and goal is a worthy one indeed.

Remember, there are other steps you must make before you step into Internet Marketing but if you don't first find the right company products and services to be passionate about, all of those other steps may just cause you a lot of frustration instead of bringing you great success.

Not being Passionate about a company and products and services that has market proof that it will sell is a pitfall you simply must avoid.

We all know the more traffic you get the more money you will make. You can't get around the fact you need traffic. Yes, you need more traffic especially if you're just getting started. If someone were to tell you their website was getting enough traffic they are either lying or nuts.

Traffic for traffic's sake is not always good. OK you are getting five thousand hits per day and not converting or selling anything. Your conversion rate is less than one percent and dropping. You are wasting a tremendous resource.

Keep in mind there is a difference between money/revenue and profits. I guarantee you can get five thousand hits a day with pay per click (PPC) on Google in a well searched niche. The problem is I would be broke in two weeks with the website above. The cost for PPC has risen in high searched niches that only great converting websites will make any money. It is not unusual to lose money with this marketing campaign. Pay per click is not the answer in most cases.

So let's step back and start from the beginning. You have to establish what you want your visitors to do and then you can develop an effective marketing strategy to get traffic. First, what do you what your visitors to do?

Do want them to subscribe?
Do you want them to buy your product?
Do you want them to buy an affiliate product?
Do you just want then to click on your AdSense add?

Establish what exactly you are trying to get your visitors to do. Write your copy using this simple but very affective system. Here is what I've got. Here is what it will do for you. Here is what I what I want you to do next. This three step system is used by all the top marketers, the big guys.

Don't be hesitant to lay out exactly what your offer is. Be up front and proud of the offer. Just make sure you lead your visitors to take action. Show them where to click, download or subscribe.

OK, you're set to steer your visitors to your offer and take action. Now you need visitors and traffic. If you're just getting started, I strongly suggest not using PPC. You should start with organic traffic. Organic traffic costs you nothing but your time. Since you have no direct cost, your profits will go way up. Social bookmarking is absolutely one of the best ways to get a lot of juice to your site immediately. I can build a new site, social bookmark the pages and have visitors within a few hours. Not only can I create instant traffic, but that traffic helps my pages rank in Google searches, too!

There are some issues about social bookmarking you should know about so that you're not surprised by them. If you're using social bookmarking the way I do, you're using it in what is probably an unintended fashion-for some sites, that is. Let me explain this.

The original idea behind social bookmarking is a sort of online, virtual community building. You find a site you like. You post it to the social bookmarking site. You recommend it to your friends. They look at your post and vote the site up. It rises in popularity on the bookmarking site, and at some point it goes viral and takes on a life of its own.

This is when you end up on the front page of Digg, and also crash your host company's server.

The guard dogs of most social bookmarking sites take a dim view of anyone who tries to game their system just for their own benefit. This is not true of all social bookmarking sites, but is very true of some of the older ones, like Digg.

Now, I dig Digg! (If that makes any sense?) I actually also use Digg in the way it was intended to be used-a community building, sort of random social validation type thing. But, being an internet marketer, I also try to-how shall I say this? Not game the system, but make it fit me instead of me fit it!

In other words, I have been known to just post my own pages to Digg just for the traffic! There, I confessed!

That's not what Digg wants. They want some sort of virgin, pristine, information experience for their users.

But we're marketers! Our very reason for living is to game systems and make money! So, in a very real way, internet marketers are often at odds with social bookmarking sites.

Having said all of this, there are some social bookmarking sites popping up that welcome commercialism! I won't mention any here, because I'm not promoting anyone one way or the other. You can find these easily.

Part of my point is-Yes, social bookmarking is great for creating traffic. But also just be aware you may run afoul of what might seem to you to be self-defeating rules and hindrances.

For instance, don't be hurt when your account at StumbleUpon, Digg, Propeller, or any of the other sites, gets suspended. It's happened to me more times than I care to admit. Don't take this personally! Just create a new email account at Yahoo! or Gmail or somewhere else and open another account at the social bookmarking site.

Okay, now that we're clear about the ins and outs of social bookmarking, let me give you some more heads up about how to use it.

There was a time not too long ago when I social bookmarked everything-and I mean everything!

In an ideal world, that would be the best thing to do.

There are, however, problems with bookmarking everything. It either takes a lot of time or money. In other words, since time is money, it's not at all free!

Even when I use free social bookmarking services like SocialMarker, it still takes a good ten minutes to fully bookmark a page. I could pay someone to do this, or pay a bookmarking service for it to be done, but I don't really think the return on investment is there.

Now, I just bookmark the first pages when I build a new site and then only the pages that I think are exceptional as I add new pages. My goal is to bookmark at least one page from all of my sites every week or so.

Bottom line, like all tools you have to learn how to use social bookmarking efficiently-but it's well worth the effort.

Top web sites are site lists focused around a common topic, for example clip art, pets, music etc.

Sites on these lists are ranked in order of "votes" - the site that gets voted most gets the top place, the site that gets the 2nd biggest amount of votes gets the second place and so on. The voting system is simple; each top web site member places a link back to the top web site on his site and for each visitor that clicks the link, the site gets one vote.

What Are The Top Web Sites?

It's a links site, that ranks member's sites by the amount of traffic they send in. They usually rank a list of the top 10 - 100 sites focused around a common topic, for example health, business, music etc.

The sites on these lists are ranked in order of "votes" - or referrers. The top referrers get one banner of theirs listed free of charge, in the top web sites section.

The top web sites have three common areas:

* The Index: that's the actual list of sites ordered by hits in

* The Sign up and Login page, where webmasters add their sites, modify setting and view stats

* The Enter page. Some top web sites have gateway pages in order to protect themselves from cheating.

In order to generate votes, each top web site's member places a link back to the top web site on his web site, and every time one of his visitors clicks over that link, he gets one vote. The more votes he gets, the better his position will be on the top web sites list.

The site that gets voted most gets the top place, the site that gets the 2nd biggest amount of votes gets the second place and so on.

Obviously, most of the traffic that goes to the top web sites pages, go to the high ranking sites, although some of the lower-ranking ones can also get a reasonable share. And the top web sites pages get traffic through the voting system, so everybody gets more traffic.

Top web site lists are then very similar to the reciprocal links exchanges; but with an important difference, at the top web sites lists, there is a "middleman" and you can't really tell with which sites you're exchanging traffic with.

The main system utilized for requesting the "votes" to the top web site is usually a picture, and this could be a real problem. If the link picture is too big or you put in a too prominent place, your site might look unprofessional. If you use a small link picture, then you might not get the votes you need to rise on the list because people might miss it.

Top web site lists allow you to automate the link exchange and distribute traffic between participating sites according to the traffic they send in. And they increase the traffic to your web site for free.

But as always the big question is: Do top web sites work?

Sometimes they do, and sometimes they don't, it all depends on the quality of the top web site in question.

How Should You Chose A Top Web Site?

* Look for one that doesn't have any pop-up windows

* It must have a lot of sites closely related to the subject of your site

* It must have it's own domain

* Monitor the traffic you're sending to the list and the traffic you're getting from it. If you send more than you receive, resign and find another topsite or other promotion method. On "How to Sell on The Web" you can find dozens of ways to get traffic to your web site.

How To Find Your Top Web Site

* Look for sites dealing with the same subject as you. They might even already be a member of a related top site

* Look for "top site" "top web site" or "topsite" at the Search engines

* Browse the topsite list directory: www dot topsitelists dot com/directory/

Once you chose the top web site that you like, just fill out the form and your site will be ready to be visited. Then you will have to ad to your place the HTML script that the top web site will give you. This script is the one that will allow your visitors to vote from your site.

Are Top Web Sites Good For Everybody?

No, they aren't... If you have a content web site, who's objective is to provide resources to your visitors, then including your site in a a top web site's list could be a good idea.

If you have created an awesome site to sell products or services, and give the people the opportunity to vote for your site; they might get so enthusiastic with the good content of your site, that they decide to vote for you, so they click on the voting button and...! They jump to the top web sites page, and your sale is lost!

What Can You Expect From A Top Web Site?

To have a high ranking in a very visited top web site list can be very good for you, because it will increase your site's traffic, and traffic means sales, and the opportunity to sell advertising space.

In August 2005 a young Englishman by the name of Alex Tew got a bright idea. He wanted to make money on the internet to pay for his studies. The idea had to be simple, not take too much of his time and be able to generate a lot of money. Selling advertising space could generate money, but the traditional way of advertising with banners on a webpage simply wouldn’t do. To make a lot of money, a lot of webpages, space and time would be needed. So Alex thought of selling really small ads – and a lot of them – on one webpage. Alex created an image made of 1,000 times 1,000 pixels – a total of 1,000,000 – and intended to sell each pixel for $1. This one image could fit to one webpage and would generate $1,000,000 if all pixels were sold. And thus, the Million Dollar Homepage was born.

Alex – like any good salesman - started by pestering friends and family and urging them to buy some pixels from him. As he started getting orders, he made the very wise decision of alerting the media of his idea. The media liked the idea of the entrepreneurial student trying to make money on the internet for his studies by coming up with an idea that simple. Alex played the media very well indeed and appeared in print, radio, TV and on the internet. As the story picked up two months into the project, Alex hired a media consultant to help him handle the frenzy. It took only 5 months until the 1,000,000 pixels were sold and the $1,000,000 were made.

Quickly a lot of copycats copied Alex’ idea and many more have followed. It is now estimated that there are now more than 4,000 sites selling pixels in a way similar to the Million Dollar Homepage. Only a very tiny fraction of these are actually making any money, so why is that?

The original page owes its success primarily to the publicity it got in the media. As any new copycat website has no or very little news value, why would anyone pick up on the story? As there are now more than 4,000 very similar sites, how could any one site generate enough traffic for advertisers to be interested in buying advertising space?

There are slight variations over the basic business idea of pixel advertising. Some pixel websites now offer free pixels and premium pixels with better location than the free ones. Some websites offer pixels on a picture of the moon or a map of a certain country or region. Other websites offer intricate ways of trading pixels or pixels at $0.01 or less.

Currently it appears that the pixel websites offering free pixels are generating the most traffic. It is likely that the majority of this traffic is from advertisers wanting to make use of the offer for free inbound links to their website.

In my view, there will never be another website making any significant amount of money on simply selling pixels, no matter what variation over the basic idea they may follow.

There are however still business opportunities related to pixel advertising. First of all, a number of websites are offering scripts which can support pixel websites. Those who want to create a pixel website can purchase a script which provides a ready made website with automated payment handling, uploading of pixel ads etc. A large number of new pixel websites have been created with such scripts and this area of business still appear to be reasonably brisk.

Another area related to pixel advertising is websites catering for the ‘pixel community’ - administrators of pixel websites and those dreaming of making their own site. Such internet users are keen on promoting, voting, categorising and comparing their own websites to others’. Websites likes The Pixel Wars list a large number of pixel websites and allows its visitors to cast their vote for websites they like the best or least. They also have a forum where pixel website administrators can share ideas or discuss the latest trends in pixel advertising. A visit to alexa.com reveals that a website like The Pixel Wars has decent visitor numbers and that it may therefore be possible to generate decent advertising income on it.

It is anyone’s guess what the future of pixel advertising will be. In my view, no new site selling pixels will ever make any significant revenue. To make money on the internet, there are plenty other more profitable roads to follow.
